Performing Gregorian (and early Medieval) chant in its liturgical context restores the sublimeness of the ritual. Several of these performances have been led by Professor Eugeen Liven d’Abelardo, who conducts the professional chant ensemble Hartkeriana as well as the Schola Cantorum Amsterdam with whom Mr. Fülling sang vespers every Sunday at the Nicholaskerk in Amsterdam. He has gone on to invite Professor Liven d’Abelardo to conduct performances at the Art Monastery in Italy and he has created his own liturgical reconstructions there, singing Complines nightly at the Art Monastery. At one point, the artmonks had sung Vespers or Masses with three separate Italian bishops. Mr. Fülling’s Jakobusvesper, returned the virtuosic early polyphony that survived in the Codex Calixtinus…which is almost exclusively heard in concert formats… to its original ritual context. He reconstructed a Vespers for the Feast of St. James from the chants also contained in the Codex. The meditative monophony of the first half hour of chants helped to restore the marvel that worshippers of the day must have experience when the soaring polyphony blossomed.
